Open Source Matters is requesting proposals for the management of the Joomla! demo site (http://demo.joomla.org). The existing Joomla! demo site has been highly successful, with an average of 25,000 registrations monthly. OSM reasonably expects the number of…

Joomla! is a finalist in the "Hall of Fame" and "Best Open Source PHP CMS" Awards sponsored by Packt Publishing. We'd encourage all Joomla! fans to vote for Joomla for both awards. With the exciting news about the implementation of Access Control Lists (ACL) in Joomla 1.6 and the incredible growth of all parts of the Joomla Project, now is a time to celebrate the great successes of this community. Over 1000 sites in the Site Showcase, 3500 extensions in the JED, 150 Resources in the JRD and almost 13 million downloads, what a great set of accomplishments by everyone in the Joomla community.

  • JoomlaCode November Maintenance

    12 Nov 2009 | 4:32 am
We're all done! Enjoy! (Updated below with open issues) Due to some awesome shifts with JoomlaCode to get newer, more powerful servers (thanks again to Rochen). However as a part of this we're going to have some scheduled downtime for parts of JoomlaCode as we reconfigure the system into a new environment. I'm intending this post to be a sort of rolling update page as I work through all of the items and get the different bits and pieces finalised with Rochen. As these are pretty significant changes, I'm hoping to keep the amount of disruption to a minimum. This is one of the first times I've…

In our efforts to continue to expand the outreach of Joomla, and also to better plan for the upcoming year, I'm looking to the community to help me put together a list of Joomla!Days you'll be hosting in 2010.  This will allow OSM to better…

While we haven't been very good about keeping our milestones, there are a few very good reasons for that. The first and biggest reason is we've been trying to shoot at a moving target. 4 Mar 2009 | 2:01 pm
On January 25th we reported back from the development coordinator summit. A lot of people noticed that we created three new development-related, publicly-accessible mailing lists for the Joomla development community. The most important reason for us to open up in this way is to attract more developers and enable them to help out with core development. As it is very tempting to start providing us with all kinds of patches, we wanted to explain what it takes to submit a feature patch. Before you fire any questions at us, please make sure you read the full article and also the link to the…

The Joomla code-base is used by millions of people around the world and we care a great deal about the quality of the code we release.  While code quality is not an exact science  we do require that code contributions to Joomla should be understandable, robust and complete. Patches should be understandable. Your patch should be understandable. If we can't work out what it does then it makes it very difficult to evaluate, and even more difficult to maintain in the future. The code must follow our coding style guidelines. The code must use the Joomla Framework API.  Do not submit patches…

  • Happy New Year: 2009 is going to be a big one (point six)

    1 Jan 2009 | 5:07 pm
2008 was certainly a big year with the release of 1.5 in January.  I think this has been one of our most successful and ground breaking releases (comparable to Mambo 4.5.1 which really pushed us to a new level back in the good old days).  A new stability release will come out this month marking 1.5's first year of life.  But what's in store for 2009?  Well, just as 1.5 up'd the standard compared to 1.0, we believe 1.6 is going to do continue the trend.

Work continues on 1.6.  As Mark stated last week, the biggest task remaining for the release of 1.6 is ACL.  The other night Louis showed me some mockups of one of the UI widgets and they look quite sharp.  It is pretty exciting to see this much sought after feature finally starting to come together.  Hannes and Andrew have also been working hard to get all of the pieces together.  Once this…
  • News From the Production Leadership Team

    20 Sep 2009 | 10:24 am
Hi everyone. This is the first of what we hope will be regular blogs to let you know what the Production Leadership Team is working on. In case you missed it, we're the people who coordinate the development, documentation, communications, bug squashing, and translation efforts for Joomla. Currently, we are hard at work getting version 1.6 ready. To that end, we are meeting weekly to sort out tasks and keep things moving. You can read the notes from these meetings on the Google Group called Joomla! Production Working Group Leadership. We have also begun work on a development budget for next…

  • GSoC Geeks Ogle Googleplex – 2009 Mentor Summit Report

    14 Nov 2009 | 7:46 pm
On October 24, 2009, the geek factor at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California, jumped even higher as representatives from 124 GSOC projects swarmed in for the weekend 2009 GSOC Mentor Summit. Steve Fisher and I were lucky enough to represent your favorite CMS. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet people from so many other FOSS projects and enjoy the geek-gadget-grab bag that is the Googleplex. Three giant flat-screen panels display a joy-stick-controlled Google Earth as you enter. The effect is like riding in a helicopter over anywhere on the planet. Turn around to see a wall-size…

With more than 13.8 million downloads, hundreds of thousands of users, and millions of Web sites worldwide Joomla! is the world's most popular open source content management system.  With this immense growth has come great challenges and great opportunities to address them. Some of you may have guessed already that there is something different and exciting in the air particularly around Joomla! 1.6. About eight weeks ago OSM decided to conduct an experiment. Joomla! has been lucky to have key contributors to the project remain for the long haul, and thanks to a targeted fundraising effort we…

  • Planning the 2010 Joomla!Day Calendar

    10 Nov 2009 | 4:48 am
This year has been a terrific whirlwind of activity in the Joomla!Day world.  With events on six continents, spanning the entire year, the community has rallied together to share lessons learned, make new friends, and help make the Joomla project better.  At some points, there were multiple Joomla!Days happening around the world in the same week! In our efforts to continue to expand the outreach of Joomla, and also to better plan for the upcoming year, I'm looking to the community to help me put together a list of Joomla!Days you'll be hosting in 2010.  This will allow OSM to better…

    10 Nov 2009 | 11:24 am
The new vulnerable extensions list has been released into the wild today. Based at the http://docs.joomla.org/Vulnerable_Extensions_ListThe announcement has been made in both the extensions forum and the documentation forum for maximum exposure. Why has this list been produced? We find that most users "install and forget" They may upgrade the latest Joomla! version, but dont always update the extensions. This has replaced the old, seldom updated list that has now been archived.Reports of vulnerable extensions can be reported to the JED http://extensions.joomla.org/ or posted in a security…
  • Pleasure, profit or pain - Giving your user what they want.

    9 Oct 2009 | 2:05 pm
It is often asked if a site should be made for the user or the designers benefit. What if you spend hours/weeks/months on your site only for people to get lost! Several sites I have worked with are doing very well with the minimum of features and fuss. Does your site really need the latest content video flashes, scrolling facebook and bouncing twitter birds? Most of the support questions I deal with are to do with paid extensions. If you have a paid for extension, the most obvious choice would be to go to the supplier first, they have your money. Unless of course you have obtained the…

Introduction When I decided to publish my Engineering wisdom on the internet, and later to set up a website for my Personal Development business, I knew that I would need a Content Management System (CMS) to do the job properly. Although I was an experienced Embedded Systems Engineer in a past life, I hadn't ever done any serious web publishing before so I had no idea where to start and expected there would be quite a learning curve. I ended up using Joomla!, which has done the job quite nicely. This article describes what I learned along the way, including some tips to save you time setting…

We've always used Joomla as our blog platform of choice here at Alledia. People are  always surprised by that, which is pleasing ... it took a lot of work. We needed a whole variety of different extensions to create the normal features of a blog. Earlier, the project indicated that 1.6 would be a stepping stone on the way to 2.0, and 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, were to be short 3-month projects rapidly executed to address smaller problems. It was said that most users would be encouraged to stay at 1.5, as it would

One thing that Mark pointed out was that there is no reason that an Unofficial Joomla! 1.5 Distribution can't also be used to address the MT 1.2 issue. That's something worth considering and we are discussing a very focused distribution that would offer the choice and help developers upgrade

  • A bridge of hope: New from Shape 5

    18 Nov 2009 | 3:55 am
Shape 5 have released a new theme for Joomla and the focus is once again, back onto the content. I like this and I also like the look of this theme - very well designed and clear. There is a crisp feel to it. The menu is bold, so you know where you are going. The functionality is simple, so you won't have issues and the flow is very straightforward, so your users won't get confused. There is a reason why these guys makes themes and why we buy them. It isn't just Shape 5 but all the professional clubs; it's becasue they know what they are doing and they do it well. This theme is a prime…
  • Theme built for Event Registration Pro

    7 Nov 2009 | 4:15 am
Do you have a website that takes booking or manages events and you want to sell tickets? If you do, you might very well be using Event Registration Pro and if you are, there is now a new theme for this extension, provided by JoomlaPraise. Now, while this theme was built for this extension, it also works and looks perfect without the extension installed, but with this extension, it does sort of fill all the gaps. Well worth the investment if you've made the investment for the extension.
  • Iridium released and it's a theme for content rich sites

    3 Nov 2009 | 4:35 am

I think RocketTheme have been reading, because this new theme is all about content.
  • Touching the soul: New from Shape 5

    25 Oct 2009 | 5:23 am
It came out a while ago, but I'm busy working on a really fantastic project at the moment, which does involve a Joomla site, geared around positive social change so I'm playing catch up with a lot of things, new themes is one of them, so I apologise. That and we've just had a baby girl, so I hope the apology gets accepted. This one from Shape 5 is nice and rather than focusing on a new extension or something you can add to Joomla to make it smarter than Joomla already is, it concentrates on Joomla and just a couple of extensions, that you'll get with the theme from Shape 5.
  • Clean and very slick blogging theme released by JoomlaPraise with extras

    13 Oct 2009 | 11:58 pm
It isn't just about creating a theme these days, you have to have something special or different included and this new theme from JoomlaPraise is no different. It is a theme specifically for the MyBlog and JomComment extensions as well as the Ad Agency extension from iJoomla, so if you are using one or all of those as I know some sites are, then this could be for you, if you also have a successful or popular blog or you are thinking of spending a few quid on a new one.
